Io, the moon

I am usually preoccupied with Io, the language, so I thought I would put together some links on the Jovian moon, Io.

Entering ‘wp io‘ in the Firefox address bar should lead you to Io

Here’s a quote:

Unlike most of the satellites in the outer Solar System, Io is composed primarily of silicate rock surrounding a molten iron (or iron-sulfide) core, as opposed to a primarily water ice composition. Thanks in part to this composition and tidal heating, Io has one of the most geologically active surfaces in the solar system, with over 400 active volcanoes and more than 150 mountains, some taller than Earth’s Mount Everest.[2],[3] Several of Io’s volcanoes also produce volcanic plumes up to 500 km tall made of sulfur and sulfur dioxide, which in turn produce large surface changes and provide material for Io’s thin, patchy atmosphere and Jupiter’s extensive magnetosphere.

Space.com can be a good spot for news. A common astronomy link is SEDS with a great photo.

Moons of the solar system can be found at Space Today and here is some recent moon science.

Sister moon Europa, Saturn’s Titan and Neptune’s Triton get much more attention, it seems to me. But then for me there is also Lua …
